a covid labor day in delaware
September 2020
Hopefully one day we will all be able to forget checking the map of green states and red hotspot states every Tuesday, right?! For our Delaware trip in September we got lucky. We left for DE on a Wednesday but we didn't know until the day before our trip if we'd be able to go or not. Our state had a serious Covid-19 protocol in place (for good reason) with multiple tests and a two week quarantine after traveling to a red state. Andrew had been working from home during the pandemic anyways, but as a nurse I couldn't do that. So after a slew of red weeks, the vacation gods were on our side and DE turned green (for only that week, might I add, before promptly switching back to red!).
Andrew and I vowed to each other that every year married we would travel to a new state and a new country. Luckily we got our country, Maldives, checked off right before the pandemic hit, but we hadn't gotten our new state yet. No offense to Delaware, but I was kind of like, eh, okay, I guess we will go. Delaware was within driving distance, my college friend Renei and her family live there, and we figured the beach was a pretty safe Covid-friendly activity, so Delaware it was!
Due to Covid, I don't have TOO much to share here since we mostly stuck around our hotel, and things were different than they normally are I'm sure, but I would be remiss if I didn't mention a few awesome things about Delaware!
-Aside from being over-crowded on Labor Day Weekend, Bethany Beach was gorgeous! I know Rehoboth Beach gets all the credit in DE, but Bethany Beach was a great beach by our standards. The water was beautiful, the waves were a blast, and we saw dolphins on multiple occasions! (Can you believe there are dolphins off the coast of DE?? We couldn't!) Loved it. We spent most of our days there.
-We loved our hotel Bethany Beach Ocean Suites. We unfortunately did not get a direct water facing room, but the hotel was steps from the beach which made it so convenient. If we needed to go to the bathroom or forgot something, it was a quick 2 minute walk back to the room. The area surrounding this hotel was so appealing as well. So many restaurants, beach shops, ice cream places, and breakfast spots all within a quick walk. The whole boardwalk area felt very safe to walk around and we thought it seemed like a great place to take kids.
-We checked out a pretty cool brewery in Lewes, Delaware as well. Big Oyster Brewery was a great spot to stop. Andrew enjoyed a flight of fun different beers while I enjoyed a Delaware specialty, the "crush". I had a watermelon version, but the original is the Orange Crush (Smirnoff orange vodka, triple sec, fresh squeezed orange juice, club soda). Would definitely recommend! In Lewes we also checked out an authentic Mexican restaurant called Agave. If you're in the mood for big margaritas, rice and beans, and a variety of guacamoles, this is the place for you! So good.
-If you are ever in the Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, or Virginia vicinity, you MUST get custard at Kohr Bros. I am an ice cream purist at heart, as it is my favorite food, but holllllyyyyy moly was this so soft and creamy. I'm somewhat thankful I don't live in one of the aforementioned states otherwise my clothes would no longer fit 😉
-My absolute FAVE part about Delaware was Bottle & Cork in Dewey Beach. It's an indoor-outdoor event space where we saw four amazing back to back bands play cover songs. How good is live music?! Especially when we hadn't been anywhere to hear it in months and months. Andrew and I sat there for hours, enjoying the warm weather, music, drinks, and overall good vibes. So many big musicians have played there over the years like Third Eye Blind, Goo Goo Dolls, and Dave Matthews Band so it was cool to be there! I only wish we could have seen Bottle & Cork in all of it's pre-covid glory. We had an incredible time, but I can only imagine the fun we would have had if we could have gotten out on the floor rather than chair-dancing. (Can't hate too much on chair dancing though, actually, not having sore feet after a night out was kind of nice).
-One other fun spot we found live music was right by our hotel. The restaurant was called Baja Beach House Grill and they had live music out back behind the restaurant. Two nights while we were in DE, we sat there eating chips, queso, and guac, sippin' on margaritas, and listening to acoustic guitar. It was a treat!
All in all, our short visit was great, and Delaware was definitely better than the 'eh' I had assigned it in my head. I'm ready to head back any time!
